THE tragic death of a toddler who was thrown 150ft to her death in a car accident, should act as a warning to all parents.

This is the view of a coroner who heard the case of 18-month old Angel Nguyen, who died during an accident on a stretch of the M4 near Liddington, in October 2007.

The coroner expressed concern that the toddler had not been strapped into her car seat when a tyre blew out on the family car.

Because of the blow-out the BMW somersaulted and landed on a grass bank hurling Angel through the car windscreen and 150ft along the busy motorway.

Several cars were forced to stop suddenly to avoid her body – with one stopping with just 15ft to spare.

The toddler was being cuddled by her mother Hau, 28, in the passenger seat of the car when the accident happened.

She died a few hours later at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, despite frantic attempts by two passing doctors to save her life.

Avon Deputy Coroner, Brian Whitehouse recorded a verdict of accidental death.

He said: “This was a tragic accident which was initially caused by the deficient rear tyre.

“I feel compelled to say that no blame can be attributed to the parents, but baby Angel definitely would have been safer in a proper car seat rather than in her mother’s lap.

“I am in no doubt that the injuries from which she died were accidentally sustained.

“This incident should act as a warning to everybody who is travelling in a car that they should make sure children are secure.”

A forensic scientist speaking at the inquest at Bristol said the crash was caused by a rear tyre that had been in a seriously under-inflated condition for a significant period of time.

A traffic policeman who investigated the accident said the car was travelling at 80mph.

Hau told the coroner how she took Angel out of the seat to comfort her because she was crying.

She tucked her under the seatbelt to cuddle her and feed her a bottle of milk.

Shortly afterwards a deflated rear tyre exploded sending the car skidding across the inside lane before mounting the grassy bank and landing on its roof in the middle lane near junction 15.

Both parents, originally from Vietnam and now living in Haringey, north London, and their six-month-old son Henry, were wearing seatbelts and escaped the accident unharmed.

Speaking after the hearing tearful dad Michael said: “Angel was such a beautiful girl with her whole life ahead of her and it is heart breaking she died so young.

“We have lost a lot of sleep and we are still very upset about the accident.

“I wish I could go back in time and not driven that day or I wish I had made sure that Angel had been in the car seat properly.”
