THE new Park Library is proving so popular that residents have nearly doubled their book borrowing.

Library staff past and present gathered at the venue yesterday to celebrate the official opening of the Cavendish Square facility.

The revamped Park South library opened its doors to library users in September.

Shaun Smith, strategic manager for adult and community service Swindon libraries, said he compared the number of books issued in October 2006 and October 2008, and had seen it rise from 3,600 to 5,900.

“That’s an indication of how much use the library’s getting,” said Mr Smith.

“The people who live in this area have always appreciated their library and always used it well. But it was nice to have an opportunity to spend some money in the library.”

Park readers spent nearly a year without their library when it was closed for refurbishment last October. The official opening was a celebration for people in the area, but it was also a chance to get better acquainted with the range of faculties on offer.

People took part in sessions on email, a literature reading and a children’s event with a magician.

Coun Graham Cherry (Parks, Con) said the library was a crucial part of the regeneration of Cavendish Square.

He said: “People were sceptical originally, but they’re embracing it now so it brings back community spirit.”

Margie Phillips, who has worked at the library for 15 years, said: “I personally think that the lighting is fantastic and that’s made a difference. Without a doubt people are definitely coming in and they’re definitely using it even more.”

Carol Dawkins, 60, of Liden, and Christine Chesterman, 60, of Stratton, both worked at the old library for 20 years, and had visited for the celebration.

Mrs Dawkins said: “It had a lovely atmosphere, but was a very scruffy building by the end, but it was a very popular library.

“It’s very different to the library we worked in, but it’s a lovely facility.”

The annual coffee morning with free coffee and cakes is on Thursday, December 18, at 10am.
