DORCAN Technology College has got its best ever inspection report after being told to do better two years ago.

The secondary has been praised for improving rapidly by Ofsted.

At its last inspection it was branded inadequate.

The school’s overall effectiveness is judged as ‘satisfactory,’ but its curriculum scores were outstanding.

Headteacher Scott Sissons said: “This inspection shows that we have worked together as staff, students, parents and governors to make this impressive improvement by focusing precisely on the quality of what goes on in the classroom.

“The next challenge is to build on the best report in Dorcan’s history to become an outstanding school, continuing to raise standards further and maintain our focus on learning and achievement.”

Ofsted recognised the changes Dorcan had put in place to raise standards, with the leadership and management of the school scoring ‘good’ after a restructuring.

“The restructured senior team has focused clearly on improving teaching and learning, with significant work undertaken in developing middle leaders, particularly subject directors,” said the report.

The school has also started monitoring students’ progress more closely.

It was also applauded for its ‘wide range of courses on offer,’ including BTEC science, Young Apprenticeships and the new Creative and Media Diploma.

Stuart Bray, chair of governors, said: “The governing body wants to thank staff and students most sincerely for their tremendous efforts over the last 16 months. “Without the hard work and commitment shown by staff, it is inconceivable that we could have made such progress in such a short time.”

The school scored ‘satisfactory’ in achievement, and ‘good’ in personal development and wellbeing, teaching and learning, and care guidance and support.
