Coate could be the new Avebury

A CONTROVERSIAL area of land in Swindon that is earmarked for a housing development could instead become Swindon’s own “mini-Avebury”, according to campaigners.

The claim comes after ancient stones, which could be part of Swindon’s Neolithic history, were unearthed at Coate.

The two sarsen stones were uncovered by the Highways Agency last week opposite Day House Farm, near the protected Coate Stone Circle.

The find has excited speculation that more historic stones may still lie undiscovered in the area.

Campaigners against a planning application by the Swindon Gateway Partnership to build 1,800 homes and a university campus on land near Coate Water say the development could rob the town of huge potential historic and tourist value.

Jean Saunders, from the Jefferies Land Conservation Trust, said: “There is a real chance here to create almost a mini-Avebury.

“This particular area is steeped in pre-history. We know of a Bronze Age settlement just south of Coate Water, two round barrows opposite Richard Jefferies’ old house at Coate, two stone circles on Day House Farm and lines of stones linking these together with others.

“It would be criminal to surround these ancient relics of the past with modern buildings. Who knows how many more of these old stones lie undiscovered? Can Swindon afford to lose more of its history?

“This raises a lot of unanswered questions. We are very aware of the importance of this whole area and it is not just Bronze Age, but medieval and Roman.

“This is something I wanted to bring up at the inquiry but because the developers didn’t actually put forward an archaeologist there wasn’t the chance. The problem was that English Heritage and the county archaeologist dropped their objections at the eleventh hour, so it no longer became an issue for the planning inspector.”

Felicity Cobb, from the Save Coate campaign, said: “It would be nice if the planning inspector took this into account but I’m not holding my breath.”

Wiltshire county archaeologist Melanie Pomeroy-Kellinger said: “I haven’t been able to go and see the stones yet but they do occur naturally in the area. There is a stone circle nearby which is a scheduled monument.”

The inquiry into SGP’s planning appeal officially closes on March 27, after which the planning inspector will make his recommendations to secretary of state Hazel Blears.

Well stonehenge is just a lump of stones anyway and apparently is a major distraction for drivers passing by so it would make sense to re-develop it - we'd also save the expense of not having to police the site every time there's some solstice or weirdo festival.

Unfortunately Swindon is no longer a one horse Town.

It has been blighted with all the trappings of modern society which bacically means the financially powerful lobby (aka builders & the Council) will always get their way.

Coate Water was originally developed as water storage for the Canal that ran through Swindon and the leisure part was a natural progression.

I am sure that many people can remember using the paddling & swimming pool there as children but you only have to look at the diving board there to realise that it is now gradually becoming forgotten.

Lydiard Park has become the new Coate Water (most unfotunately in my humble opinion)so it is clear Coate Water has outlived its usefulness in that respect.

Coate Water is also near the M4 and has additional land available for development at the back of Marlborough Road - where the Bath & West Show used to be held - so the future for the Coate Water area has already been mapped out - sorry friends of the earth or whatever title you are using.

However I really do fret for all the inhabitants of Park South. I mean fancy all those undesirable students moving into their neighbourhood!

Jock Strap, Truss is very honest : the rich will do everything to get richer destroying people environement in the name of "progress" or lets call it GREED.
The other point to mention is that for the rich, it is easy to get away from any kind of trouble, killing our planet is not a problem, their descendents will most likely be rich enough to travel to another planet in few generations times, leaving us the mortals to the mercy of what is left of Earth.
Great future!

This feed is getting very heavy - but the thinking of all major governments is to sustain life on earth for as long as possible whilst looking to colonise another planets - this is why the US are regularly popping off to Mars.

This fragile earth cannot sustain our pollutant life forever.

Janais is back, Upper Penhill - I guess you're not aware of Village Green registration (fully applicable to towns and cities).

A village green is classed as an area where people in the community have enjoyed legitimate sports or pastimes as of right for at least 20 years.

Once registered as a Village Green, the land is protected by legislation which pretty much means it can't be developed. In fact once registered as a green any development that prevented continued use of the green is considered as a criminal activity.

Another typical dumbhead comment from one of Swindon's moonraking fraternity.

Yes, let's build over our ancient megalithic heritage. Let the Corn Exchange and Mechanics' Institute fall into ruin. Close down the Jefferies' Museum and sell off the land off to the fattest property developer around. Leave the unique and exquisite Barbury Castle replica Iron Age roundhouse unmonitored and open to the elements 24/7 until louts burn it down. Let's live with a pre-fabricated library for close on fifty years.

The 'cultured' folk of Swindon get the 'responsible' councillors they deserve, while the town's already meagre heritage goes to hell in a handcart.

I used to live in Windsor Road many years ago and contrary to what jiver thinks, I have lived in Swindon all my life. I can remember very clearly when they blew up some large sarsen stones where Farleigh Crescent is now. You carry on though. Never let the facts get in the way of your NIMBYism.
Thanks, Mr AG

I don't know Jiver but I do know the song, "Donald, where's your trousers?"

So you lived in Windsor Road, did you?

At which number, may I ask?

I have lived here for many years and may remember you....

Or know someone who does...

The Adver?? NEUTRAL????
Not in a million years! Are you aware of how many times you and your cohort Miss Saunders have had articles printed that we the general public are not allowed to comment on?
As I posted before, please leave the Purton NIMBYS alone.... Give them at least a fleeting chance of success!

Hear! hear! let's hope the Longcot Lone Ranger and the Windsor Rd Tonto keep their nebs out of Purton. Hiya Flicks honeypie -what's happened to your egyptian buddy - cat seems to have got his tongue -mind you that's no surprise as nobody could understand his ramblings anyway! Is he too busy painting Jeffries cottage perhaps.

Fortunately I moved away from there well over 40 years ago - long before the NIMBY's took over. It was the top end of Windsor Road, an odd number and when I moved there the road ended just past Dunster Close.

Not that you're bothered in any factual information, but my name is not Donald, never has been and unlikely to be!
You and jiver carry on thinking that though and my true identity will never be revealed.

A message from Hassanein. He has been at the Jefferies' house painting and decorating. He has also cut the grass.
He asked me to tell you that unfortunately there were complaints from people like you about his postings and that his account was suspended.
He was extremely worried that he had obviously upset 3 people, and thus cannot come back to the site, though he does read what people say.
I gather he has an interview for an engineering job in Bristol next week.He sounded pretty excited about it since he likes to work and does not want to be a burden on the state.
I must admit, Jean and I thought he was brilliant...very kind and helpful... and with an upper class accent!! (I'm sure he won't mind me telling you that!)He also mentioned something aboutthe British Embassy in Cairo , but am not too sure about that.
He also has connections in London...something about a motorcycle club to which Hazel Blears belongs. Apparently she is tiny and loves putting her leathers on and hitting the road.!!
I didn't know that.

I will keep you posted as long as you are polite about him.
He did meet Jiver and they are in contact. He was extremely impressed by her and they went for a run together, apparently.
If you have any questions you want to ask I will put them to him, but they must be polite. He said he had degrees in Engineering and Psychology and had done a whole lot of different jobs...he was a fascinating person...

I don't know about the sarsen stones in Farleigh crescent but I do know that Wiltshire is littered with them, especially Sarcen valley, on the Ridgeway, and around Marlborough.

The stones I was pictured by had just been unearthed by the Highways Authority, so it is an exciting find, and there may well be others that will come to light.

So ,your name is not Donald?

I wonder why, when I asked a question of Jiver of your being named Donald and with the surname Phi...ps, immediately you asked for the post to be removed.

Hmmm. I wonder why....if that is not your name.

I suspect because jiver has this fixation about me being a councillor living somewhere in the Chilterns - something I have never been, having lived in Swindon all my life.
She's the one who's got me confused with someone else and you seem to have latched on to that as well.
I am not who she thinks I am and I suspect some of her posts were libellous, which is no doubt why the Adver removed them. I'm not bothered about what names I'm called, even when they are incorrect, but unfortunately she's obviously too thick to realise she's got it wrong - as you have.
Anyway, carry on if you like, it does amuse me that you are blissfully wallowing in ignorance.

As to Achmed's absence from this site, I suspect the real reason we've not heard from him lately is because after meeting you, The Loncot One and the one legged tap dancer, he took flight and hotfooted it back to Egypt where he felt safer.

Does that mean you have no objection to me calling you Don Phillips?

If it suits you then it also suits me, and that is how i shall address you from now on.

Mr PeeveD,

Strange that you should mention "Mayorship" with regard to Hassanein.

The noun does not easily come tripping off the tongue for me as it does not exist anywhere in my world.

Nor in Hassanein's.(I assume.)

But it seems that it might be in .....yours?

Or, rather, it might ...have ...been in yours (in the past tense)....???

What view do you take on this theory?

Also "threatening assault on one of our more popular posters"

You seem to be better informed than me.

Who might that be , do you imagine?

Surely not Mr PeeveD, AG or Jock Strap of Truss (what a charming name. i wonder why it was chosen.?)

I take no view on any of your "theories" This is because you are all half truth, supposition and fudge... as thankfully the Coate enquiry quickly found out!
It doesn't matter who Mr. Hassanein threatened... the point is he did!
But of course to a sanctimonious bully like yourself I would imagine you would find this behaviour acceptable.

Pray continue stroking your chin in a Holmes like fashion whilst wondering about who others may or may not be... but maybe just for once you should turn your wonderfully blunted analytical mind inwards.... or does that thought seem as offensive to you as it does the rest of us?

Flicky says...
9:29pm Sun 22 Mar 09

It sounds as if i may be correct then, Mr Peeved.??

You beg 2 questions-
1 That I am a "santimonious bully"
2 That I might find the behaviour of Mr Hassanein "acceptable".

Why should I agree on either count?.

I do not need to wonder who "the others may or may not be".

I am not that interested; it causes me to lose no sleep.
What does interest me is this....

You are obviously a man who is used to speaking in the public domain in a certain fashion: that is obvious from your choice of words and sentence construction.
It marks you out as having been brought up in a certain era....you use words such as "fudge", "toffee", "pray", "santimoneous" and many others which, quite frankly, I cannot be bothered to recall.
The very words you use reveal so much about you. I was pointing out that for me to use the word "Mayor" would be way off my understanding: it is not a noun that I use very often.
But you obviously use it in everyday conversation, which led me to make the comment I did...and it was not a query.

Finally, I am not aware that the Coate Inquiry conclusions have yet been reached...or do you know something that the public does not yet know, but many have hinted at: namely, that the Inquiry was but a cover for a done deed?

I shall look foward to Mr Richards' conclusions and advice for Ms Blears in July.

Until that time i shall assume that the sides will be judged impartially and a fair judgement reached.

Mr AG

"Carry on if you like..."

Does that mean you have no objection to me calling you Don Phillips?

If it suits you then it also suits me, and that is how i shall address you from now on.

I hope you will give Jiver the same priviledge ,since you say you don't mind as it is not your name?

But if my post is withdrawn then I shall know i have touched base!
Call me what you like, it only makes you look more ridiculous than you already are!

People who know who I am are laughing at your stupidity.

You say people who know who you are are laughing at my stupidity.

i would have thought, considering the offensive comments you have scattered over all the posts, that the last thing you would want is recognition and your real name revealed.

If i had written some of your comments I , too, would be wanting ti hide behind a pseudonym.

That's fine with me , Don Phillips.
That's the name I shall address you as from now on, seeing as you don't mind at all.

I think I can bear the chuckles of laughter from your sad "friends".

I have chosen to ignore nothing.

Can anyone tell me which parts of Swindon were originally land belonging to the Coate farmers?

From my conversation with one owner I gather that great swathes of the Park estate, Eldene and Covingham as well as Lawn were compulsorily purchased by SBC.

So that must make an awful lot of NIMBYs, Mr PeeveD?

Most of the houses in the Parks are council owned. These houses are allocated to people... they generally don't have a choice about where they live.
YOU however CHOSE to buy a house which is built on land that was once classed as an area of natural beauty... and then bemoan others who want to do the same. Or those who want to further their education. Or those attempting to find regular employment.

Pure selfishness and hypocrisy!

So why is it that people from Park South and North, Eldene, Covingham and Lawn have signed the petition in the way they have...with huge enthusiasm.????

Not all of these houses are council owned. In fact, apart from the Parks I should imagine that most houses are owner occupied.
The enthusiasm for signing (and anger at the proposal) in all areas of Swindon was enormously high, and especially in these areas quoted.

Why are you kidding yourself?
I had to stop families from multi-signing petitions, they were so irate.
You're not telling me that has escaped your notice?

"pure selfishness and hypocracy"....such typical PeeveD words that reveal his occupation and character so well.

I could almost compile a Peeved dictionary using lots of Enid Blyton - like words.
toffee, fudge, hypocrite, blatant, and now pure selfishness and lemonade.

All this vocabulary doesn't half give your age away, you know.
It is so dated .

You are an excellent reporter, and we enjoyed your company over Save coate.

Possibly your editor might allow an article about the postings on this website and the different vocabulary and pseudonyms used??

Usual refusal to answer a point then... just more proof of NIMBYISM and yes... selfishness and hypocrisy are two fine words that some you and your type up perfectly.
You don't have to be of any particular age to recognize the truth.

And how many of these people are complaining about the proposed development of the Purton area?

We are also quite aware that Ant 'n' Dec/Tony Benn etc live nowhere near the Lawns/Coate area.

The vast majority of the people who reportedly signed your toilet roll did so assuming that the facts you gave them were true. Turns out that various well informed bodies saw through your lies and said as much at the enquiry!

Did you feel a little silly when the Environment Agency/Highways Agency and the Wilts Wildlife Trust ALL disagreed with you fudge?

Again, you are begging a question.

1. To what part of the Inquiry in particular are you referring?

2. Were you present at the inquiry and so know everything that happened there?

I think not...so how can you possibly know about the minutia we sat through?

You did not hear me speak for which, incidentally, I received considerable applause.

I think you need to update your vocabulary from out of the Victorian times/ ark.

"Selfishness and hypocrisy" are words found only in Council Chambers in 2009, didn't you know?

Similarily, "Bah Humbug" is fine in a Panto but not really applicable in everyday life, now is it?

I suggest you buy a Brewers' Dictionary of Phrase and Fable...I'm sure you might find it interesting....and it would help to enlarge a somewhat limited vocabulary.

As to your 2nd post, Mr Peeved,

1. Why mention Purton?

Save Coate , as every schoolboy knows, refers to the area around Coate.

2. You wonder why Ant and Dec and Tony Benn signed.

I imagine for the same reason as Lady Philippa Scott of Slimbridge, the Poet Laureate, Andrew Motion, Richard Mabey andWill Self, for instance ,thatdevelopment on a greenfield site, especially when it is so near to a SSSI and Nature reserve,
is not, they feel, an idea with which they have any sympathy.
"It is shocking ", wrote Ldy Scott, that such a development should be considered.

They are not NIMBYs, as you so emotively describe the Save Coate supporters, just people who value green spaces and their wildlife as being necessary for the human soul and body.

3.Our "toilet roll", as you so ineloquently describe our petition that took time and money to accumulate,is not an accurate description, and smacks of derision.
I suggest you use the DOFAF recommended to you in order to enlarge your somewhat limited vocabulary to find a more suitable word.

4.We received some personal telephone calls with regard to the agencies you quote with messages of apology for withdrawal.
In fact one gentleman from one of these agencies sent me a signed note of support for the Save Coate campaign.
You would, of course, have had to have been at the Inquiry to know the details of support.
Your knowledge of the Inquiry is as breathtakingly slender as your somewhat limited vocabulary.

I am not a 'friend' of Jock Strap but enjoy his updated scores. Flicky I do feel that you need to get a sense of humour. The majority of your postings lately have been bordering on being 'not nice' to people. You may not agree with what they are saying - and I do not agree with some things that are posted but instead of being rude would you not be better putting forward reasonable arguments to back up your views.

Thank you Loveall - exactly right sense of humour - I did lauugh at the petition being described as a toilet roll! why? because it was funny and again you have hit the nail on the head re Flicky putting forward reasonable arguments as some of her responses have just invited further ridicule and laughter. like I said earlier there is sport to be had and I just scatter the corn and along come the pigeons -Caw! caw!
FLICKS SAID-> Life is way too short for all this nonsense so I shall call a halt to studying this particular thread and go and do something useful..-> yes off you go Felicty and do something useful -hey that might be a first? but whatever you do make sure you keep away from Purton - Oh there goes the final whistle - Peeved 4 Flicks 2 -cracking game though!

I think this sadly deluded woman is miffed because everyone knows who she is and she hasn't got a clue who the rest of us are, despite what she might think.

Looking at the standard of writing in her last posts, one has to query whether she was actually a teacher, as she has claimed on a number of occasions. No doubt yet another figment of an overactive imagination.

I suspect she'll respond to these posts despite her promise not to - we'll see.

Well as I've said - pigeons can't resist corn - you only have to scatter it and along they come! Her cover was blown when she went public writing to the WG&H re guess what -ah yes Coate! and then went on about living in the lawns and spouting off to the Adver to publicise the cause! -and it does not take a rocket scientist to work out that Flicky is a very common shortening of the name Felicity
