Is this the shape of things to come?

THIS is the image that could represent Swindon to the rest of the country, and the world, if an ambitious partnership between Swindon Council and a ski dome developer gets off the ground.

The multi-million pound snow dome would play host to the longest ski-run in the world, as well as an ice skating rink, cafés, bars, speciality shops and street entertainment.

As revealed exclusively in the Adver, Swindon Council and Urban Ski have been in negotiations to bring the attraction to land at North Star for more than 18 months.

Although discussions have stalled during the economic meltdown, Swindon remains a prime site according to the developers.

Kevin Ferris, the chief executive of Ski Trac International, the global company behind Urban Ski, said: “The ski dome proposed by Urban Ski will be a general destination for both skiiers and non-skiiers alike with numerous attractions including a 1,000-metre bobsled ride, snow-play and toboggan slope, themed ice-skating canal, water park, snow-view restaurants, specialty shopping, a four-man sled ride to the Antarctic, and an Alpine gondola ride.

“Urban Ski is studying various sites in the UK, the Swindon site being a possibility.

If you had one in Swindon you’d get people from Bristol, Bournemouth, Devon and all over the place coming here and spending their money. It would be a great draw

Snowboarder Lee Hallett

“Whether it will be the first of its kind worldwide will depend on the speed of approvals.”

Mr Ferris said an agreement had already been signed in South Korea for a Ski Trac as part of a planned 10-lift outdoor ski resort and 54-hole golf country club. Other domes are planned for locations in China and the US.

“We are, of course, hoping that Swindon Council gives the site the go-ahead.”

The proposals have received a rapturous response from Swindon skiiers and snowboarders.

Lee Hallett, from Oakhurst, has just come back from a snowboarding trip to Bulgaria.

He said: “ I think that it is the best front page news Swindon has had in the 30 years I’ve lived here.

“Swindon’s location and industry gives it the potential to be one of the best towns in the country but the lack of recreational facilities really lets it down.

“If you like going to the pub or the gym Swindon is great, but if not you really are limited.

“The problem is that all of the snow domes are in the north of the country, so you’re forced to trek up the motorway.

“If you had one in Swindon you’d get people from Bristol, Bournemouth, Devon and all over the place coming here and spending their money. It would be a great draw.

“I’d be a gold member – I’d be there every weekend.”

Coun Phil Young, Swindon Council’s lead member for regeneration, said: “We are keen to have further talks with Urban Ski. I think this would be a fantastic facility for the town.”

The last time this story was out they said that it would go on the Oasis site.

Looks great. Hope it happens.

There will always be people who will do anything to stop progress - remember the stadium idea for Peatmoor forest which was stopped - how is Swindon ever going to compete with the likes of Bristol?

No! no! Lawns or Coate definitely is the place it should be.

this sounds amazing but im sceptical as the pattern usually is that everyone gets behind the idea then they agree to it - then the developers say we can only have it if we sell the town hall off as their warehouse or something utterly stupid but it goes ahead as there is massive support for it (calculated before the location and conditions have been applied) anyone remember the trams stadium and university we would get if we let down our guard and allowed a hospital on the front garden?

Bulldoze all those God-awful hotels (including the latest eyesore nearing completion), theme pubs and empty shops and put it in the centre of town and give us all something worthgwhile to travel into Swindon for.

Sounds like ths story was due to be published five days ago but one of the hacks pressed the wrong button. There is absolutely no way this will ever be built in Swindon.

Oh, I dunno - the thought of half the current town centre being buried under tons of snow and concrete does have a certain appeal to me....

Brilliant wherever it is, don't care.
Why the Lawns and Coate though?
Too far out for transport links, better in town.

Please build this.

I've never skied, but anything that can bring a bit of fun, character and inward investment to Swindon is a good thing.

I'm sure there will be somewhere suitable to build it! Just think of the jobs and money it'll bring into the town - we need something different here to attract outsiders who may well venture to the shopping areas, restaurants etc as well.

If the double deckar bus in the mock up is to scale this building will be huge, just what we need to replace our rundown minging town centre 'shopping' area. However as with everything to do with SBC and the New Swindon Company its all talk and flannel, nothing will ever happen and it will never be built.

Captain Sensible - Swindon provides us with plenty of pound shops how can you say the town centre is minging? :-)

Even the pound shops are having sales and the charity shops are closing down!

No one has said how much it will cost to
use it.Probably out
of most peoples pocket.Cant see job-
seekers alowance covering it.

I hope that they build it, looks fab, but please don't build it near the eye sore that is the Oasis. That would spoil it completely. If it's going there then please let's sort the Oasis out, its beyond embarrassing now.

Captain Sensible says...
9:23pm Mon 6 Apr 09

From the size of it Mumstheword you could fit the Oasis inside it several times over!

NoseyNeighbour says...
9:57pm Mon 6 Apr 09

build it over the oasis then lol

Please please please please please build the snow dome!

This will do more for the town than anything built in the last 30 years, and more than anything the New Swindon Company has proposed (who have yet to comment, once again, on this proposal).

Swindon Council - you must do whatever it takes to make sure Swindon is the location of choice, don't let this slip away! Despite the downturn, give them the reassurance that Swindon really wants this!

I just hope pensioners are allowed to ski for free - they deserve nothing less!

Having said that, I suspect that I will be long gone before anything like that is built in Swindon with the current rate of progress in the town. I'll just have to resign myself to looking at boarded-up empty building sites.

Only if you want broken limbs, and depending on your age. Great for the young but not for elderlies like me!

I'd like to see it in town, mind, to boost business, for those who want to use the facilities.

I think it will be built but only with the second coming of Christ!
