THE NSPCC is calling on all adults in Swindon to take action if they have any concerns about the welfare of a child.

Following recent high profile child protection cases such as those involving Baby Peter and the rape of a two-year-old girl, the child protection charity is urging adults to be alert for signs of abuse and to take action if they have any worries that a child may be suffering.

Last year the NSPCC Helpline received more than 73,000 calls from adults concerned about a child, 933 of which calls came from Wiltshire.

Callers spoke to advisers about a range of concerns including physical and sexual abuse, neglect, family relationships and mental health.

In many cases the adviser provided support and guidance to the caller but more than 10,000 of the 73,000 calls were so serious that they had to be referred to the police or children’s services.

John Cameron, head of the NSPCC Helpline, said: “High profile child protection cases like those of Baby Peter and the rape of a two-year-old girl result in widespread public feelings of concern and frustration. But there is something we can do.

“By being the eyes, ears and voice of a helpless young child, neighbours, families and friends can prevent or stop that child suffering.”

If anyone has any concerns about a child’s welfare they can ring the NSPCC Helpline on 0808 800 5000 or email help@nspcc.
