A STROLL through London led to an impromptu gig for Will Rendle.

The singer was passing through Trafalgar Square in the early hours of the morning when he was asked if he wanted to perform on the square’s fourth plinth.

Will, 23, was approached by the organisers of the One And Other project – an arts scheme which will see 2,400 people occupy the fourth plinth for an hour.

The full-time musician, from Church End, Purton, was returning home after a gig at The Flowerpot in Camden when he was approached at about 2.30am on Sunday. He said: “It was all rather quick. I was just standing there watching some guy on the plinth.

“Two girls who were organising it saw me and asked me if I wanted to go on.

“I jumped at the chance — they sobered me up with a lot of coffee and I went on.”

Will performed a variety of original songs from his band Will And The People.

The singer and guitarist sang the band’s tracks Sometimes, Knocking, Weirdos, Eyes and Salamander.

He finished his set with two requests – Just Dance by Lady Gaga and Wonderwall by Oasis.

He said: “People seemed to react really well. It was a strange experience – I was up on a plinth with an acoustic guitar.

“It was very weird that there were so many people jumping around at three in the morning while I played on a rock.

“It is definitely in the top five surreal moments of my life.”

The One and Other project is the brainchild of sculptor Antony Gormley.

The artist has asked people to volunteer to stand for an hour on the fourth plinth, which is normally reserved for statues of kings and generals, to ensure a 24 hour presence for his 100 day project.

He is not the first person from the Swindon area to take a turn on the plinth.

Last week Michael Scott, 44, from Haydon End, spent an hour on the famous London landmark.
