A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl is ploughing her way through a stack of paperbacks to raise money for a charity.

Kayley Whitfield, of Northern Road, Rodbourne, is doing a sponsored read for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.

The Ferndale Primary School pupil is already on her sixth book and aims to turn a lot more pages in the next two months.

She chose the charity because family friend Oscar, from Wroughton, suffers from the condition.

Kayley said: “I read before I go to bed and after school – I like all books. I haven’t got a target, I’m just trying to read as many as I can.”

The readathon started on Kayley’s birthday, October 3, when her mother Amanda, 40, suggested it.

Oscar, who is 22-months-old, has check-ups at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

His mother, who did not want his surname publicised, said: “Kayley’s not raising the money specifically for Oscar, but it will go to the charity looking after him.

“We have known Kayley all her life and she’s an amazing little girl, we’re proud of her. She’s doing such a lovely thing and she’s going to help lots of people.”

The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign provides free care and support for babies, children and adults affected by the muscle wasting disease.
