YOUNG bookworms will be meeting top children’s authors next week for the Swindon Ten Youth Festival of Literature.

The second Youth Festival of Literature aims to encourage young people to explore and celebrate the world of literature.

School partnership Swindon Ten is funding the £10,000 festival, which will see 15 authors and illustrators visiting Swindon’s secondary and primary schools including caricaturist Fred Blunt, who will be at Kingsdown School today.

Also popping into Swindon’s schools are writers including Sarah Singleton, Chris Bradford, Anne Cassidy, Sam Enthoven, Chris Higgins, Cathy Hopkins, Anthony McGowan, Sophie McKenzie, Patrick Ness, Bali Rai and Ali Sparkes.

Pupils will also have the chance to demonstrate their own literary talents in a speed-writing competition, book debates, quizzes and illustration contests.

Kate Cann, one of 2008’s featured authors, said: “This is exactly what book weeks should be about – author visits linking into the students’ own writing and reading. I’m impressed.”
