A former international athlete who represented the UK in the 400m sprint has been offered the role of chief executive at Wiltshire Council.

Subject to approval at the full Wiltshire Council meeting, Andrew Kerr, 50, who, since 2005, has been the chief executive of North Tyneside Council, will take over the top job at County Hall from Dr Keith Robinson.

He will be on a salary in the region of £189,000 and will be responsible for £800m of taxpayers’ money.

The father-of-three, who was on £164,000 in North Tyneside, said he was looking forward to the challenge.

He said: “I am joining Wiltshire at a key moment in its history – it is a vibrant new council with a determination to succeed and deliver high quality low-cost services for local people.”

Mr Kerr joined the North Tyneside Council when Labour took power in 2005 and leaves a few months after the Conservatives took over. Wiltshire Council is led by the Conservatives.
