MORE children in Swindon will soon reap the rewards of a £1.1m overhaul of play areas in the town.

The latest stage of the improvements was completed at the Pembroke Recreation Ground in Moredon, which now boasts a new run way, pod swing and fitness equipment.

The play area is the sixth one to be completed by Swindon Council since April, following a cash injection from the Government.

The other parks are St Marks Recreation Ground in Gorse Hill; Basil Close in Woodhall Park; Snodshill Park in Eldene; Liden Green in Liden, and Pinehurst West Park.

People will be able to enjoy the new facility at a launch tomorrow from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, where there will be a hog-roast, boombox and play ranger activities.

Fireworks will also be set off to mark the opening of the new facility.

Councillor Garry Perkins, Swindon Council cabinet member for children services, said: “The official opening of new play facilities at Pembroke Recreation Ground marks a real milestone for the council in bringing the children of Swindon fresh and exciting play equipment.

“It has been a pleasure to see the transformation of these play areas so far, and I hope children will enjoy them for years to come.”

The project will see 22 play areas being transformed over two years as part of the Playbuilder Project – an initiative funded by the Department for Children Schools and Families and co-ordinated by Play England.

Rundown or out-of-date sites were chosen following an extensive survey of all playgrounds in the borough, each of which had to meet set criteria to be included in the revamp, including site age, condition, current play value and location.
