SWINDON residents are being reminded of the services available to manage their long-term health problems.

The Self Care Awareness Week runs until Friday.

The aim of is to raise awareness of information and resources available to help the public, particularly those with long-term conditions, take control of their own health.

Self care is the actions people take every day in order to stay fit, maintain physical and mental health, meet their social and psychological needs, prevent illness or accidents and care for long term conditions.

Long-term conditions include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary heart disease, depression, diabetes, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and strokes.

Almost one in three people and three out of five people over 60 in the UK suffer from a long-term condition and, due to an ageing population, this number is set to rise by 23 per cent over the next 25 years.

Self Care Week builds on the launch of Your Health, Your Way, a guide to long term conditions and self care, which is available on NHS Choices.
