PLANS for a multi-million pound visitor destination have been unveiled.

Developers The Lakes By Yoo have applied for planning permission to build a country park near Fairford and Lechlade.

The proposed scheme includes a visitors’ centre, a community space, a sculpture and wildlife trail, a cafe, an organic shop and holiday units.

The project would take three years to complete and would cost millions of pounds.

The country park would be part of The Lakes By Yoo’s 650-acre site. The company has invested millions transforming the old quarry pits into a luxury second homes development.

The application is with Cotswold District Council.

Giles Baker, director of The Lakes By Yoo, said: "This project is our investment in the community. It's an exciting project which will bring jobs and visitors to the Cotswolds.

"We want the park to be at the heart of the community in Fairford, Lechlade and Kempsford."

The country park would be built on a derelict farm near Bowmoor Sailing Club. The existing derelict buildings would be demolished and replaced with ones made of Cotswold stone, timber and slate.

Created in a series of interlocking courtyards the park would include a114-bed bunkhouse accommodation. There would also be a playground and seating areas.

A circular two-mile adventure wildlife trail would include features such as a wobbly bridge, viewing tower and platform, sculptures, a boardwalk and bird hide.

The basic footpath was opened in August by local dignitaries including Fairford mayor Joe Cusack, Lechlade mayor Chris Eatwell and Chris Nugent, vice-chair of Kempsford Parish Council.

"The first stage was to create and open the footpath," said Mr Baker.

"The next stage is to add all the attractions to turn it into a family destination. Families will be able to use it free of charge. It is important to us that the community gets the opportunity to appreciate the amazing wildlife we are so fortunate to have here."

Part of the proposal will be to include spillways to ease possible flooding. The nearby A417 was badly affected in the 2007 flood.

The application for full planning permission has been filed with Cotswold District Council.
