MP ANN Widdecombe has become patron of the Swindon-based National Bullying Helpline charity.

Miss Widdecombe, pictured, said in a letter to the charity: “I very much hope your project is successful because I think that where genuine bullying is taking place the mental stress can be very serious, and a poisoned atmosphere in a working or learning environment can take all the joy out of each and every day.”

Charity chief executive Christine Pratt said: “Given that stress and the affects of bullying impact on the nation’s health so detrimentally, we have carefully chosen our patrons, specifically for their expertise and professionalism. “Our patrons will play an important role in helping us to promote our cause at national level.”

As part of National Ban Bullying Week 2009 this week, Mrs Pratt will address pupils at St Joseph’s Catholic College.
