RECORD-BREAKER Mike Buss has set his sights on his next world record while still nursing injuries from his previous feat.

The 35-year-old physical training instructor, from Highworth, has said he wants to break the 10km speed record for running with a 120lb pack at the Swindon 10km in Wroughton on Sunday, November 22.

But he is still recovering from an event that saw him cover 82 miles in three days, in which he lost several toe nails.

He said: “The pain and everything, I love it.

“It was horrendous and the last 10 miles was horrible, but when I finished it was brilliant and I just wanted to do it again.

“I have seriously got the bug.”

Mike, who was medically discharged from the army after 10 years, took part in the Druid Challenge Ridgeway Ultra – an 82-mile cross country run across the Ridgeway from Berkshire to Barbary Castle.

As a build up to the race, he decided to also run a marathon a day on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday beforehand. By the second day he was forced to abandon the 40lb pack he was carrying for the rest of that day.

Despite injuries due to problems with the arches of his feet, Mike managed the last day of the race carrying the pack.

He said: “My injuries actually turned me to tears from the pain for the first time in any challenge I’ve ever taken on. I told myself why I was doing it and that home was not far away and carried on in a lot of pain.

“I have a good idea of what the pain of hell feels like now but I’m going past it – the goal of £100,000 for Help for Heroes is too important.”

Mike has now signed up for the Marathon des Sables 2011, a 240-mile trek across the Sahara Desert.

He also plans to take part in the equestrian-themed Wickstead Wander Five-Mile Cross Country Race on Sunday.

So far Mike’s feats have earned his chosen charity Help for Heroes £5,000 but his aim is to break 20 records over the next two years raising £100,000.

Mike is also inviting people to join him in Highworth’s Market Square on Friday for the Help for Heroes Sleep Out.

Fundraisers can register for the sleep out by emailing activelifeuk@ hotmail. com.

The cost to enter is £10 which is payable on the night, and participants are asked to raise at least £10 in sponsorship.

All participants will be given a cup of soup on the night and a fry-up the next morning.
