HUNDREDS of children from 18 schools were in harmony last night for a gospel Christmas concert.

The 520-strong choir, made up of Swindon primary and infant school pupils, performed songs from the musical Sister Act at the Oasis Leisure Centre in front of families and friends.

Another concert, sponsored by Zurich, for children with special needs, is due to take place tonight with pupils from Uplands School, Crowdy’s Hill and Brimble Hill performing, among others.

The concerts, which are taking place for the second year, are being organised by Swindon Music Service – part of Swindon Council.

Organiser John Winterflood, of the music service, said: “As you can imagine if you are a singing in a choir of 600 as a child, it is pretty dynamic.

“We run junior and infant music festivals every year with 1,200 children. They are so successful we thought why don’t we do something similar for Christmas?”

Coun Garry Perkins, cabinet member for children services, said: “These concerts are a wonderful opportunity for local children to sing their hearts out and show us what they can do vocally and musically. It is also a chance for children to enjoy a positive experience and feel proud of themselves.”

The council said the aim of the concert is to give children the chance to perform in front of an audience.
