“CAN we have Sunday lunch here every week,” said my student daughter, hopefully, after we’d tucked into some seriously good roasts.

If money were no object, I’d be more than happy to grant her wish - I’m not precious about my culinary skills!

But as good value as Longs’ Sunday lunch is, we won’t be doing that until she and her 14-year-old brother can pay for themselves. As that’s not likely to happen any time soon, we’ll just have to make do with the occasional visit.

The last time we’d eaten there was about a year ago and I’m pleased to say that standards haven’t slipped in the slightest.

We tried all three roasts (£8.25 each): English sirloin of beef, half roast chicken and leg of British lamb. There’s also a vegetable loaf at £7.95.

The thick slices of beef were perfectly cooked, as was the lamb and chicken.

A large fluffy Yorkshire pudding accompanied each serving with crispy roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, sage and onion stuffing and rich, dark gravy.

There was mint sauce for the lamb, a creamy horseradish sauce for the beef and a great selection of vegetables which included roast parsnips, tasty cabbage, broccoli, chunky carrots and red cabbage with sultanas.

Despite not finishing all the veg - don’t expect me not to nag just because we’re out for lunch! - the children still managed to find room for desserts (all £4.25) of a rich, sweet Bramley apple pie with ice-cream and an Irish Cream cheesecake.

For those who fancy something different to a roast, there is a selection of burgers (£7.95), salads (from £4.95 and ciabattas and tortilla wraps (£5.95).
