Shuttle buses aim to ease parking problems at hospital

CONGESTION at Great Western Hospital may be a thing of the past thanks to a new staff shuttle service to be introduced in January.

The shuttle-bus will run from Honda’s South Marston site and will free up around 200 parking spaces at the hospital for use by patients and visitors.

The service is set to launch on January 4 with no cost to its users who pay between £3.33 a week and £200 a year to park at Great Western Hospital.

Great Western Hospital NHS Foundation Trust will foot the £30,000 bill but points out that the cost is dramatically under budget.

Mark Bagnall, director of estates and facilities management at GWH NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We had hoped to get this in place by Christmas but there are still a few issues to sort out.

“The service will be up and running by January 4 and after speaking to staff about the plans, many have said it is a service they will be glad to use.”

The shuttle bus has been launched after a review of the hospital’s parking provision following a surge of complaints about hour-long waits to find a space.

Mr Bagnall said: “We decided to create the bus service for staff because in some circumstances it would be difficult to ask patients to park up and take a bus in.

“Many may also drive to the hospital to find a space and would only use the service as a last resort whereas staff would find it more convenient as many have to pass Honda to get here anyway.”

The news will be a welcome relief to most patients and visitors.

After 45 minutes of driving round the packed car park, Melanie Crayford from Old Town said the changes couldn’t come quickly enough.

“It is definitely about time something was done there,” said Melanie, who has been stranded with husband Stephen in the car park on several occasions.

“It has been okay in the past but suddenly it is mayhem up there,” she said.

“I am certainly pleased the bus is going to be for staff because it will not only free-up spaces for patients but it means patients are not forced to take a bus.”

Why not just build enough car park spaces ?
.
Is this such a radical idea ?
.
There is so much land at the hospital, surely there should be a completely free car park for staff at the hospital, and a paying one for the visitors ?

I dont understand why patients should have to pay for parking anyway

Why should we have to pay to use the carparks? We already PAY to support the health service, why should we now PAY to park there? This is effectively a Tax on the ill and those who have to visit them, its a bl*ddy disgrace. Its also pay and display which means that, with the appointments often being anything up to 1 - 2 hours late, to avoid getting a ticket from the officious jackbooted nazis who patrol the area you have to pay for far more parking time than you potentially need.

why not using this initiative for council workers and school children?
great to reduce CO2 and traffic congestion.

I'm not so worried with visitors paying - I can see the argument for both sides in that...
.
However the nurses cannot even get parked - and when they do they have to pay - now that IS an absolute disgrace that the local NHS people should be absolutely ashamed of themselves for !

Hopefully this will stop hospital workers using Matley Moor and the surrounding residential streets in Liden as a free overflow car park. They virtually block the road at times and prevent residents parking outside their own homes. This has been going on for a long time.

Not really their fault though pencil - I am sure they also don't want to have to park in Liden to get to work at the hospital.....
.
There is simply no good reason why they cannot expand the car parks to accomodate the extra need...

I have no objection for paying for my parking, but please just build some more parking spaces to meet the demand. Someone, somewhere, have the guts to use common sense and stop trying to solve a problem with nonsense suggestions when a very simple solution is staring everyone in the face.

Are they paying Honda for the honour of using their site for parking ? If so, why not use the council owned park and ride site near Penhill ?

Off you go ‘Old Town’, no one is interested in what you have to say.
Don’t you have a nativity display to save?

Sorry - do you actually have something to say about the STORY here or just more of your personal insults ?

Well this is at least an effort, albeit one that supports the disgusting policy of charging for parking at the hospital.

could it be that council has already allocated the surrounding land dare i say for private development as part of the University package !

Hey--how many buses does it take to shuttle 200 drivers? £30,000 is hardly realistic now is it? This looks like 200 parking spaces will be transferred to public parking and considering all the nurses shift patterns vary and diversity of areas they live it is totally counter-productive and highly suspicious.

As a nurse working at the GWH I think it is really unfair that we staff have to be transported in when we arrive and leave most days when it is dark I would fear for my safety having to be transported on and off site. Why is it that we can't have a multi-story car park it wouldn't use up any more precious land and surely would be cost effective in the long run???? The other bug bare for staff is that patients and visitors are allowed to park in staff spaces but staff aren't allowed in theirs why is this when we all have to pay to park???
