Film: Twilight

It’s November. Christmas is wheeling around the corner and as 2008 draws to a sombre close with recession in the air, hordes of screaming “Twihards” line the streets of cinemas, armed with pre-booked tickets and bags stuffed with popcorn.

After the success of the Harry Potter series, it seemed that the battleground for adaptations of books was all but won. Enter Twilight, a darkly romantic tale about an ordinary girl who falls for a not so ordinary boy and don’t forget your eye candy to go with it too. Yep guys, if you value your relationship with your girlfriend, and don’t want to see her gaping senselessly at Robert Pattinson, stay away…

But…If I’m being nice, the film did stick closer to the plot of the book than a certain saga about a wizarding school. Don’t even get me started on the ridiculous scenes in the forest and at the prom, which might I add were poured, like dangerous amounts of full fat cream, into the film for extra pizzazz.

However, the filmmakers didn’t shove as much topless-ness as expected and they tended to rely on the actors’ capabilities as opposed to special effects, which were as diverse as a rusty fork.

Cam Gigandet played the role of the sadistic vampire “James” very well but, in my opinion, far too much of the film’s focus was on Edward and Bella’s ‘alone time’ which consisted of:

“I love you Bella.”

“I love you Edward.”

“I love you Bella.”

“I love you Edward.”

You get the picture…

Because I’ve whittled on about this film for over 275 words, I have to give it some merit. It’s not too my tastes, but I’ll be counting the days (like millions of screaming girls) until New Moon comes out next year, but wait – it has!

Praise the heavens, and for anyone who does like this franchise of fantasy, for the older readers of Harry Potter – it is a good film. 6/10
