Film: Wizard Of Oz

After hearing various opinions about an all-time favourite-The Wizard of Oz-I was determined to give it a go. One day my year 10 English teacher announces that we have the opportunity to watch it and I’m sort of excited…sort of.

The 1939 original classic follows Dorothy as she tries to find her way back home after tragically being displaced in The Land of Oz. There, she makes friends, kills a few witches and follows the Yellow Brick Road!

This initial excitement sadly vanishes as the first 5 minutes of the film appear on the screen. Wide eyed I scan the room to see four other people (who chose to watch it as well…out of 256) staring blankly at the movie. Gripping eh.

Even though it did absolutely nothing for me, I have to say that Dorothy (played by Judy Garland) did do an ok job considering the circumstances. Also the effects deserve a ‘shout out’ as I don’t think any other film could have managed to create such a fantasy in 1939.

So if squeaking creatures, a predictable plot, and singing every two minutes does it for you, this is the film to watch. To be honest we all enjoy a cringe-worthy movie once in a while.
