A 63-year-old Swindon man has been arrested for causing death by careless driving after a cyclist died on Whitworth Road last night.

The incident happened at 10.50pm when the driver, who was traveling along Whitwroth Road towards Rodbourne in a small van, struck the 59-year-old pedal cyclist at the junction with Pinehurst Road.

Despite paramedics desperately trying to revive the man, he had sustained serious injuries and died at the scene.

Police closed the road for six hours and the driver of the van was arrested and bailed pending further investigation.

Officers in the case are now urging any witnesses to come forward to try and piece together what happened.
