MOST Swindon Town fans had little reason to be cheerful on Saturday – but for lifelong supporter Darren Buzza it was the happiest day of his life.

As other supporters watched the club slump to defeat against Millwall at Wembley, the 40-year-old was celebrating his marriage to the love of his life Vicki.

Darren, who listened to the second half during the wedding breakfast, said that although the game meant a lot to him, the result did not ruin the day.

He said: “The whole day was surreal and amazing. The loss was not a dampener on the wedding. At the end of the day, it was a win-win situation because if Swindon won then great but either way I still got my bride.”

The service, attended by 63 friends and family, took place at St Margaret’s Church in Stratton – just an hour before kick-off at 3pm.

When the photographs were finished at about 3.45pm, the newlyweds got into a Rolls Royce and listened to the radio commentary of the end of the first half as they headed to the reception at South Marston Hotel.

The couple, who live in Stratton, and their guests started watching the second half on a television in the bar before listening to the rest on the radio in the reception room as they ate their meals.

A table in the room was adorned with a Swindon Town shirt bearing the words ‘Just Married 10’ and the wall was decorated with two large Swindon Town flags bought by Vicki at the County Ground.

Darren’s aunt Sheila Kimber gave him two mock Wembley tickets as a wedding present and the speeches also referenced the team.

“They just said how mad I am on Swindon and how Vicki is going to have to put up with Swindon Town being my bit on the side,” said Darren, an HGV driver.

Later in the evening, more friends and relatives who attended the game arrived for the disco.

Vicki, 48, a nursing assistant at Swindon’s Great Western Hospital, said: “It was a fantastic day from start to finish.

“The result of the game was just unfortunate. I don’t think the match overshadowed the wedding because Swindon Town are one of the great loves of his life – me first of course.”
