AN action group has been set up in opposition of plans for a new Aldi store in North Swindon.

Staff at the nearby Costcutter store – just minutes away from the planned Aldi supermarket in Latham Road – have now set up a meeting with their supporters.

Kanthappu Bala, proprietor of the store in St Andrews Ridge, said: “Aldi has assured that this new opening will not lead to the closing down of the Costcutter, because they will not be providing the following; lottery, newspapers, cigarettes, bill payments, electricity and gas top-ups, TV licence and parcel service.

“In our view, these are considered essential services for the everyday lives of our local community.

“However, our store cannot survive by only supplying these.

“Any drop in sales will result in the Costcutter being closed down. Act now – do not regret it when it’s too late.”

The bargain supermarket chain has previously expressed its intentions to open up to seven stores in Swindon in the near future.

Aldi proposes to build a 990sqm food store on the 1.6 acre site, along with 100 car parking spaces and landscaping.

Aldi says the store will feature a contemporary energy efficient design to fit in with the high profile site fronting Thamesdown Drive. A similar store has recently been completed in Hounslow, London.

The chain has also recently achieved planning permission for another store in Drove Road.

Mr Bala has arranged a public meeting at the Jovial Monk pub at 7pm on June 10.

Mr Bala said: “Show your support for your local store.

“It’s your only chance to protect your local services and raise your objection to the new Aldi store.”

Depending on the planning consultation process, Aldi hopes to submit a full planning application by the end of July.
