Back Garden, a voluntary residents’ forum, has been launched with the aim of restoring some community spirit.

But instead of chatting over the garden fence, the forum will give access to information about the Old Town area via blogs, a Facebook page and Talk Swindon.

Peter Green, one of the founder members, wanted to set up the forum to encourage people to do something about their problems rather than just complain and the Back Garden blog already has 70 to 80 hits a day.

He said: “We are covering 2,000 people in 500 homes so that is a good start.’’ The forum joins Swindon Council’s Connecting People Connecting Places project which is building a patchwork of small communities across Swindon.

Project assistant Sean Haines said: “What is different about this group is that they come up with suggestions how to improve their local area. This helps the council to make informed decisions.’’ Founder member Toby Robson, who has lived in Old Town for 10 years, said: “In my childhood, when there was trouble on the street, lights would go on and you knew people were looking out for you. We are recreating that power of being part of the community.”

And Andy Marcer, the landlord of the Beehive pub, said: “This forum extends the talk from the pub to more people, bringing a sense of community to large numbers.’’ Coun David Wood, Eastcott ward, said: “Neighbours working together is so important for democracy and getting things done.’’ The forum has street reps to ensure the forum is briefed on all areas and more are welcome. The forum covers the area between Eastcott Hill and Victoria Hill, and between the top and bottom of Old Town Hill. For information visit www.swindonbackgarden.wordpress.com/
