Pride celebrations gets Nationwide's backing

Nationwide Building Society has announced that it is sponsoring the Swindon and Wiltshire Pride celebration taking place this weekend.

The event, which begins at noon on Saturday, is free of charge and will feature a number of attractions, including a wide range of music and comedy acts performing on the Nationwide Main Stage and Mini Main Stage throughout the day, a parade led by Wiltshire Fire and Rescue, winners of the Pride Pet Show, a market area and advice stalls and on-site refreshments.

The Nationwide Main Stage will include a number of top musical and comedy acts, including singer and TV presenter, Toyah Wilcox, and Pink tribute act, Try This Pink.

The Mini Main stage will host a repertoire of new and upcoming bands performing from 1pm until 7pm.

Caroline Hallatt, Nationwide’s head of corporate responsibility, said: “Nationwide is proud to be an active contributor to the local community, and the Swindon and Wiltshire Pride ethos of diversity and acceptance is one that mirrors our own.

“This is the first time that Nationwide has sponsored this event and we hope it will be a huge success and fun-filled day.”

I hope it's a good weekend for them.

However, would Nationwide sponsor a 'straight' or 'British' festival if approached?

Remember, they did say that the 'ethos of diversity and acceptance is one that mirrors our own'.

Diversity and acceptance means EVERYBODY.

The Pride Event is for EVERYBODY! I'm going plus a Staight mate from Nationwide and many families the same as previous years. I wish people would stop going on about Gay events not being excluse and asking why we need them. The truth is we live in very much a hetrosexual world where most events are hetro based. There are other events held in Swindon such as the Mela and this event is just the same.I've been to everyone one and each year there are a good mix of straight, gay, families and everyone else so no way can it be said to be an exclusive event.

I've no problem with gay pride at all, hope all that attend or take part have a good time. But the statement "The truth is we live in very much a hetrosexual world where most events are hetro based" above is total rubbish.

Virtually all events that are held anywhere have no realtion to sexuality at all and gay people are welcome. Some striaght people dont like gay people but frankly how do they know if a bit of dicrssion is used?

EG inventing more fiction again. Perhaps you would would.

A. Provide the source of they refused to participate.
B. Who asked them.

Arkells give tens of thousands to charity each year sponsoring 'whole community' events, as well as the Prospect Hospice. Unlike the Council using rate payers money to support this event or Nationwide using members money, Arkells are a business and serve this town very well.

But I guess in the end your comments are complete fallacy.

No they where asked and they declined. Enough said really.

Says who EG. If Arkells were asked to provide a bar, and their outside bar was available I hardly think they would turn the business down now would they. Or was it that the organisers just wanted another handout.

You really are making the Pride Committee look money grabbing, after all this is not a charity event is it? This is a commercial event.

Asked by who? Perhaps the Pride committee could answer. Did they ask for a handout, did they ask for a bar, or as I suspect did they ask at all.

No handouts were asked for as far as I know.

EG hang on a minute, I think you are a little confused, so if they didn't ask for a handout, ERGO sponsorship, and assuming they were approached for a bar, it was probably committed elsewhere.

Either way not the snub you sought to imply earlier.
