FIGURES released by the government show that pupils in Swindon are performing below the national average.

New data shows that last year, 49 per cent of pupils across the town achieved at least five GCSEs at grades A* to C including Maths and English, whereas other pupils across the country achieved an average of 54.8 per cent.

However, The Commonweal School and Highworth Warneford School bucked the trend with 64 per cent of pupils achieving at least five grades A* to C including Maths and English.

The Ridgeway School achieved 60 per cent, and St Joseph’s Catholic College achieved 55 per cent.

The lowest achieving school was the Swindon Academy, where 32 per cent of pupils achieved at least five A* to C grades including Maths and English.
