ONE group performing as part of the mayor’s variety charity show say they are keeping the roots of popular music alive.

Mr Love & Justice, a folk pop band, said they are proud to call themselves Swindonians and are delighted to have been invited to take part in Smile, which has been organised by Swindon mayor Coun Rex Barnett.

Lead singer Steve Cox said: “Our first ever performance at the Wyvern Theatre is a great way to start the year for us.

“The mayor’s annual show is a great opportunity to support three fantastic causes which all do absolutely vital work in our community.”

The charity concert, which takes place at 7.30pm on January 21, is in aid of the Prospect Hospice, The Willows counselling service and CALM, Swindon children’s cancer and leukaemia movement.

Mr Love & Justice has has many incarnations at various times but the line-up at the Wyvern will be Steve joined by Marcus De ’Freitas on guitar, Rob Beckinsale on bass and Brendan Hamley on percussion.

The band has enjoyed a longevity thanks to its ever changing personnel but at its core is Steve, creating that quintessentially English sound.

Having grown up listening to The Beatles, Steve has a defined style of writing that always carries a strong story or political message yet his songs have catchy pop tunes that make you want to tap your feet.

The guys will be performing tracks from their latest album Watchword, which was released a year ago to excellent reviews.

“We will be showcasing songs from Watchword and our previous album Homeground,” said Steve.

The band are best known for their festival appearances, having notched up gigs such as the Laimon Acoustic Guitar Festival in France, The Trowbridge Pump Festival, Wychwood Festival in Cheltenham, Lammas Festival in Eastbourne, The Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival, Guildford Blues Festival and the Big Session in Leicester.

“We are honoured to play our part in helping out,” he said.

“So come along folk pop fans, get along to the Wyvern to show your support for us, but more importantly these very worthwhile causes.”

Tickets cost £12 from 01793 524481 or www.wyverntheatre.org.uk.
