THREE worthy causes are set to benefit from the Mayor’s charity concert.

Mayor Rex Barnett’s variety event will take place on Friday, January 21 in aid of his three chosen charities – the Prospect Hospice in Wroughton, CALM – Swindon’s children’s Cancer And Leukaemia Movement and The Willows counselling service.

Sheryl Crouch, the head of fundraising at the Prospect Hospice said: “The funds raised by the mayor’s concert, and also those raised by all that he has done throughout his mayoral year, will make a considerable difference for the patients and families we care for.’’ The concert at the Wyvern Theatre will feature Pegasus Brass Band, Commonweal and Isambard school pupils, magician John Williams, pop and rock band Mr Love And Justice, Swindon Talent winners: Jade Wilkinson, Jahmene Douglas and Samantha Maybee, Swindon Dance Youth Academy and Swindon Dance Urban Youth group, Wilkes Academy Of Performing Arts and classical singer Eleanor Williams.

The hospice reached out to more than 1,600 people living with cancer last year, some in their own homes, some in care homes and some in the Great Western Hospital.

Sheryl said: “Last year it cost more than £5m to provide our dedicated care for the 1,600 patients referred to our service.

“More than 70 per cent of our funding is raised through the support of the people of our community so events like the mayor’s concert and the money they generate really matter.’’ This year the hospice is celebrating 30 years of helping patients and their families.

Sheryl said: “Primarily I hope those who go along on the night, and the performers who feature in the concert, have an unforgettable evening.

“But I also hope they leave the evening with a sense that they have done something positive for the people who benefit from each of the charities.

“Perhaps it might get them thinking about how they can contribute to support through fundraisng or volunteering. That would be fantastic.’’ The volunteers at the hospice are regarded as ambassadors and receive full support, relevant training and career development.
