A WOMAN has been told to expect a jail term after admitting causing the death of a motorcyclist through careless driving.

Donna Hackett, of Radnor Street, is thought to have been more than twice the limit when the Vauxhall Astra she was driving struck the bike on the M4 motorway on September 18 last year.

Hackett, 26, then fled the scene of the smash on the eastbound carriageway, close to the Membury service area on the Berkshire border.

She was found in a field close to the motorway after the Thames Valley police helicopter flew to the scene to assist the hunt.

Hackett pleaded guilty to causing the death of Wayne Moores through careless driving while the alcohol in her system was over the prescribed limit.

A judge at Swindon Crown Court was told that the level of alcohol in her system at the time of the crash was subject to a back calculation.

Colin Meeke, prosecuting, said expert evidence put it at a range between 60mg to 94 mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, the legal limit being 35mg.

But he said the figure he would be putting forward was 74mg, putting her just over twice the legal limit to drive.

Mike Pulsford, defending, said they did not contest the expert evidence but may have it checked.

He said his client had no previous convictions of any sort and asked for the case to be adjourned so a pre-sentence report could be prepared. Mr Pulsford also asked for an interim disqualification to be imposed so she could start serving the inevitable ban straight away.

Judge Euan Ambrose agreed and adjourned the case to Friday, April 8, and released her on bail she co-operates with the making of the report.

“The fact that I am granting bail and ordering a report is no indication that I am not considering a custodial sentence,” he said.

“I am sure you have been advised that for this type of offence a prison sentence is more or less inevitable.

“You must make all arrangements before April 8 in anticipation of a prison sentence.”

Motorcyclist Wayne Moores died when his Honda 125cc was in collision with a red Vauxhall Astra on the motorway between junction 15 and Membury services.

The accident happened in darkness at about 1.50am on the London bound carriageway close to the border with Berkshire.

All three emergency services were called to the accident but Mr Moores, 28, from Chandler’s Ford, near Southampton, died at the scene.

The Thames Valley police helicopter was also deployed and a woman was arrested after being found in a field close to the motorway.

Mr Moores, a skilled blacksmith, was making his way home for the weekend after working in Wales when the accident happened.
