A MOTORCYLIST is fighting for his life after he collided with a van in Wroughton.

The biker, who is in a serious condition, was trapped under the van following the collision on his 2300cc motorcycle at Brimble Hill on Monday evening.

The Great Western Ambulance Service received a 999 call shortly after 8pm.

An ambulance crew and a paramedic in a rapid response vehicle were on scene within minutes, as well as a doctor and a GWAS officer to liaise with other emergency services on scene.

GWAS officer Vince Almond said: “The nature of his injuries meant it was a long, slow job working with the fire service to release the patient from under the van.

“Once he was freed, we spent considerable time stabilising him – administering pain relief and placing him on a spinal board – to transport him safely to hospital.”

The rider suffered significant internal injuries, including several broken ribs, as well as possible spinal injuries and a broken ankle and a specialist trauma team was on stand by at Great Western Hospital to treat him.

The Wiltshire Air Ambulance also attended the incident, but the patient was eventually taken to Great Western Hospital by road ambulance. The driver of the van was not injured.

In January, a pensioner was left with serious, life-changing spinal injuries after he was involved in a head-on crash at the same spot. Five people also had to be taken to hospital for treatment following the crash.

And in 2009, Philip Suddes, 28, of Alexandra Park, was killed when a car he was a passenger in lost control on an S-bend in Brimble Hill and ploughed into a tree.

Driver Mark Weeks, 23, of Shripple Lane, Winterslow, near Salisbury, was cleared of causing his death by dangerous driving.

He was instead convicted of the lesser charge of careless driving, fined £175 and had five penalty points put on his licence. Anyone with any information on Monday’s collision should contact police on 0845 408 7000.
