A CANCER support group has entered a competition to be in with a chance of winning £10,000 for a project that benefits the local community.

Abc Swindon has entered the Douwe Egberts UK ‘Be a Local Star’ competition, which also awards £5,000 and £3,000 to second and third places.

The community-based group is a self-help support group for anyone affected by cancer, including patients, carers, family and friends.

They offer practical assistance which enables members to escape their worries for a short time and enjoy a positive, relaxing experience.

Trustee Brenda Craft said the group would put the money towards day trips for members.

“We need the funding to take our members out on day and/or theatre trips, short holidays, and for meals out,” she said.

“Such outings are a lifeline to our members as most do not have much money nor in some cases the wherewithal to travel far afield.”

Julie Baker, managing director of Douwe Egberts UK, said the company had decided the run the competition in light of the recent funding cuts.

“We believe that socially responsible brands should be doing as much as possible to help in the community,” she said.

“We feel that local, small-scale charities will feel the pinch hardest of all and are therefore most worthy of help to carry on their important work.

“That is why we have launched the Douwe Egberts Be a Local Star competition.”
