TOWN fans have lost patience with manager Paul Hart after they suffered the heartache of relegation – and they are calling on him to go.

The under-fire Robins chief has faced a barrage of abuse in the wake of their drop into League Two, barely 12 months after the team narrowly missed out on the Championship in the League 1 play-offs at Wembley.

At the team’s last home game against Notts County, Hart was confronted by an angry fan waving a season ticket in his face and his dugout was surrounded by police as home fans turned on him.

It is understood the club’s board of directors will meet later this week ahead of Saturday’s final home game of the season against Oldham Athletic to consider the manager’s future.

However, the directors will have plenty of food for thought to consider with hundreds of Swindon Town fans venting their anger against the manager on web chat forums and the Adver website.

Fans are now asking for Glenn Hoddle – the former England player and manager who turned Town’s fortunes around between 1991 and 1993 – to take over at the County Ground and steer them straight back into League One.

When asked who they wanted to replace the current manager the one name that was on everyone’s lips was that of Hoddle, who was seen at the County Ground for the match against MK Dons.

Paul Hart was appointed as the new boss at Town in March after Danny Wilson resigned from the post following a run of 11 games without a win in League One.

Since his appointment Town have only won one game out of his 11 – a one nil away win at Brentford at the beginning of the month.

Fans have been left frustrated by the team’s negative attitude with only six goals scored.

David Poynter, 72, of Liden, said: “It’s OK for Hart to say if they'd given him the job earlier he might have been able to keep us up, but all he’s done is set up the side not to lose rather than to win games.

“If we concede a goal we’re immediately in trouble because we’ve got nothing up front.

“I don’t know who to blame for all this, Paul Hart or Andrew Fitton and the board of directors.

“Now I would like to see us give a good young manager a chance, like we’ve done in the past with the likes of Hoddle and Ardilles.”

Peter Chandler, 46, of Walcott, said: “This season has been a joke.

“Fitton should have acted quicker with Wilson and then to make things worse he has brought in a manager who seems incapable of attacking.

“I have been a Town fan for more than 30 years now and I have never seen such terrible displays.

“I wouldn’t mind if we were playing well and went down but, excuse the pun, we have shown no heart.

“I have heard talk of Hoddle making a return which would be a huge boost to the club if that could realistically happen.”

His views were echoed by Andy Young, 62, from West Swindon, said: “I have had enough of Paul Hart and I hope Fitton has the sense not to renew his contract at the end of the season.

“I can’t believe how we have got from promotion candidates to League Two so quickly the fall has been disgraceful.

“There needs to be some big changes at the club and hopefully we can start next season fresh with new players and a new manager and get back to basics.”

Nigel Bennett, the spokesman for STFC Supporters’ Club said: “Sadly the relegation was something that we feared for many weeks and it was a fate we’ve now suffered.

“It is important now to re-focus on next season.

“With around 4,000 season tickets already sold for next season and a solid financial base we should be held in good stead for a quick return.”
