Pegasus Brass Band is launching a new school of brass to encourage youngsters to take up an instrument.

Members of the band will provide free use of instruments and free tuition on a Saturday morning at their own music hall in Ermin Street, Stratton St Margaret in Swindon.

Pegasus Brass’ director Mile Lock is the leading light behind the school and he is keen that no-one with talent loses the opportunity to learn an instrument.

He said: “We firmly believe in playing music as a positive life experience where one learns not only the beauty and satisfaction to be gained from music but the priceless value that one derives by seeing the result of the close teamwork that playing in musical ensembles produces.’’ Pegasus School of Brass is launched tomorrow when the band will hold a demonstration and recruitment day for youngsters from eight years upwards. Everyone is welcome to just turn up from 10am to noon and sign up for the free lessons.

Mike said: “Our plan is that the lessons will be free to suitable candidates and they will be taught by myself and other band members.’’ The teaching will be individual and in small groups and when the musicians are accomplished enough they will take their place in the full band.

Mike has been both a professional performer and teacher for many years and his aim with the school is to promote high quality brass playing for future generations and he says to keep banding alive in these financially difficult times.

He said: “All are welcome at our launch as we also plan to hold lessons for players who already play but are seeking to improve. We intend to make positions available within the band whenever possible.’’
