SWARMS of police officers, sniffer dogs and specialist policing units have closed off Manchester Road.
A spokesman for Wiltshire Police was unable to tell the Adver what has happened, only that it was a 'serious incident'.
The duty inspector for Wiltshire Police added that no more information could be made public until the Senior Investigation Officers (SIOs) had been to the crime scene.
Corporation Street, Manchester Road and parts of Broad Street have been completely closed off by police and motorists are being diverted away from the area.
Dozens of police officers and sniffer dogs are in the area and police tape has been erected on most of the neighbouring streets.
One eyewitness said: "I dont know what is going on but police seem to be focusing their attention on a car parked on the pavement on Manchester Road.
"All you can see is loads of police officers and medical staff around this car and a big light above it.
"It is really scary whatever has happened."
