A HOSPITAL is not the usual place you would expect to see exclusive pieces of art work, but the Great Western Hospital is bucking the trend.

The next time you visit the GWH, take a look on the ground floor of the hospital and you will see the new art exhibition on display, with exclusive work from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

On display until September 13, the exhibition is entitled ‘Transformations: Digital Prints from the V&A collection’ and features work from a range of artists who work with computers as an expressive and experimental medium.

The artists have used the computer as an artistic tool to create a series of eye-catching and stimulating pieces of work.

The exhibition is on display at GWH as part of a project by Paintings in Hospitals, a charity established in 1959 that uses art and creativity to reduce sickness, anxiety and stress in hospitals.

Jane Coleborn, chief pharmacist and chairman of the arts committee at GWH said: “The Trust is very proud to have the exhibition from the Victoria and Albert Museum on display at GWH.

“All of the prints featured in this exhibition have never been exhibited outside of the V&A and for some of the artwork, this will be the first time it has been displayed.

“We are extremely grateful to Paintings in Hospitals and the V&A Museum for arranging this exhibition. The use of art within hospitals and healthcare facilities has been recognised for some time now as providing considerable benefits to patients, staff and visitors, which is why we have always worked to make art a prominent feature of GWH.

“Since we opened in 2002, Paintings in Hospitals has helped us achieve this by loaning impressive temporary exhibitions and individual artworks for display across the hospital.”

The V&A exhibition is on display on the ground floor of GWH in the temporary exhibition space.
