DRAGON-slaying and singing will be the order of the day as the town centre turns red and white today to celebrate St George’s Day.

A 20ft-high figure of England’s patron saint will lead a procession from Regent Circus to Wharf Green via Canal Walk, to mark the day, which is officially on Monday.

It will be followed by entertainment laid on by a host of local groups, including the Britannia Majorettes, Swindon Air Cadets and a play recreating the legend of St George’s slaying of the dragon.

Organiser Kirsty Heber-Smith said: “Fun, games and music will play a major part in the colourful, four-hour extravaganza which will create a carnival-like atmosphere and transform the town centre into a sea of red and white.

“Aside from the procession numerous attractions, entertainments and events will take place at various spots around the town centre.

“Attractions around the town will range from a face painters to the Big Sing Thing, fairground rides, plus the chance to try out juggling.”

Simon Jackson, the chief executive of inSwindon, said it would be a fantastic day out for all the family.

“An incredible amount of work has been put into this,” he said.

“ You just have to look at the day’s programme to see how many people, groups and organisations have become involved.” “It will be a real community event, which is really in keeping with a celebration of England’s patron saint. Let’s hope the weather does its part.”

Spectators will be able to enjoy assorted rock and pop music throughout the afternoon and watch a whole range of entertainers, such as the Swindon samba band and Bollywood dancers.

The celebration, now in its fourth year, will be in support of the Mayor of Swindon, Coun Ray Ballman, and her chosen charities Open Door, Football in the Community, The Rowdy Bunch and Swindon Rotary Club.

The St George’s Day Parade starts in Regent Circus at 11.30am. It will head to Wharf Green where the festivities will continue until 4pm. A full line-up of events is available at www.
