A FATHER whose leg was broken when he was knocked down by a car is appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Jason Smith, of Moredon, was walking by the exit of the Brunel car park in Farnsby Street when he was struck down by the car and it rolled over his leg, snapping his femur.

The car then reversed back over him and the 32-year-old, who was taken to Great Western Hospital, is expecting to have his leg in a cast for the next six months.

“I saw the car coming out and I backed up but I wasn’t quick enough. She was coming out of the car park pretty fast and I turned around to try and stop myself from being run over,” said Mr Smith.

“Someone I knew from town was shouting ‘back up, get off’ and then I heard my leg crack again. If it had gone any further up it could have been a lot worse.

“My natural instict was to push off the bonnet and away from the car. That is how I ended up on my back and with the car half way up my lower leg.

“It really hurt, it still hurts now. I am in a lot of pain.”

The incident, which took place on Thursday April 5 at approximately 3.30pm, involved a woman in a light blue Toyota hatchback.

“She stopped when she saw she had snapped my leg. She backed up and I heard a crack again and she got out the car. I remember her face,” he said.

Jason said several people saw the incident and he is hoping they will come forward.

“I was in hospital up to last Friday and I called the police to ask about the incident; they said the cameras weren’t working in the old Brunel car park and no one had come forward with a registration or as witnessing the incident,” he said.

“I can remember seeing about six or seven people around the scene at the time. The woman driver left the scene and I don’t have any indication as to who she was.

“It is the fact this person could do it again that really gets to me. It could be my daughter or someone I really care about. It puts things into perspective for me. I would just like to see if this person or if anyone who witnessed the accident will come forward.”

An ambulance spokesman said they received a 999 call at 3.38pm reporting a road traffic collision near the tented market. A paramedic in rapid-response vehicle was on the scene at 3.43pm, backed up by ambulance crew at 3.49pm.

Mr Smith was given pain relief before being taken to Great Western Hospital at 4.20pm.

A Wiltshire Police spokeswoman confirmed they were dealing with the incident.
