THE organiser of Swindon’s Big Arts Day have chosen a line-up that will give music fans something to sing about.

The day, to be held at Lydiard Park on July 14, will showcase the best of the Swindon art scene, including music, dance, drama and literature.

More 90 applicants applied to perform at the event, which attracted more than 25,000 people last year.

And 42 talented musicians were selected for auditions.

Local hip hop artist AJ will headline this year’s main stage after returning from a tour of Australia.

He will be joined by artists who have also performed at the town’s Big Weekend: Bully, Takura, Bozo, Daine and friends.

They were interviewed by a panel of six judges, including Helen Miah, the head of cultural services at Swindon Council, who said the performance standard was extraordinary.

She said: “We picked as many as we could squeeze in. We tried to pick a cross section of music from across all genres, everything from punk and ska to brass band.

“We’re really thrilled that AJ will be headlining. He’s just come back from his world tour so it’s perfect timing.”

Community Big Sing Thing, Swindon Samba and Brunel Brass will all perform on the main stage and visitors can also enjoy music from the acoustic/alternative stage and the Riffs/Holmes stage.

There promises to be something for everyone, including families and literature fans who can visit the Children And Families Zone and the Literature Zone.

In total more than 1,000 people will take part in the day, which will feature more than 100 acts. Organisers are currently looking for volunteers before and after the big day.

“We’re always looking for volunteers,” said Helen.

“You don’t have to volunteer for the whole day. We’re looking for people who are willing to do stewarding, help with car parking and manage crowds.”

The day is free and will run from noon to 11 pm.
