SCOUTS and Guides in Lyneham have received a cash boost to transform their nature area into a weather monitoring hub.

The group applied for a Watermark award from Wessex Water to help them purchase a weather station and animal feeding observation points.

They have recently moved into new headquarters with mature trees surrounding it, which the group says will provide a great opportunity for a challenging outdoor space.

Jan Kelly, Guide leader, said: “We are delighted with our Watermark award from Wessex Water and the support that it gives our conservation projects. “Despite the upheaval of moving from our previous headquarters our new ‘home’ has a lot of potential.

“We are establishing an adventure trail and a variety of ongoing conservation and nature projects which will give the Scouts and Guides lots of opportunities to gain their badges.”

Watermark awards provide funds for environmental projects within the Wessex Water region. They have supported about 800 initiatives since starting 19 years ago. Organised by the Conservation Foundation, all projects are judged by a panel chaired by president David Bellamy.

Harry Wheeler of Wessex Water visited the group on Thursday to see the conservation area and present the £250 award.
