MENTAL health service users took time out to get physical yesterday.

Service User Network Swindon (SUNS) held a fun day at the athletics track next to the County Ground to raise money to give users the opportunity to enjoy activities such as arts, crafts and day trips – and to raise awareness of mental health issues and the benefits of exercise to mental wellbeing.

The event consisted of sponsored laps on foot either walking or running, sponsored laps on wheels in bikes or wheelchairs, and wacky races where people could pay a small fee to take part in fun races with an egg and spoon, three legged or various cycle races.

Helen Burr, administrator for SUNS, organised the event in partnership with Swindon Active Life, part of Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP).

She said: “It has gone really well and everyone seems to have enjoyed themselves.

“Because it has been so successful, we will try and organise it on an annual basis because this is the first time we have ever done it before and it was all a bit of trial and error.

“It has been suitable for all ages and abilities to get involved, we have a lady who is quite disabled doing sponsored walking around the tracks which is great.

“It’s good to promote exercise and show that service users and providers are working closely together and having fun at the same time, and it is good to be on the track, especially with the Olympics coming up this year.”

SUNS has a total of 200 members ranging in age from 18 to 65 and offers space and support to build confidence and be heard, ‘Have a Voice’ groups where you can talk about your experiences while doing crafts or playing games and opportunities to influence change within the local mental health services.

SUNS attends and contributes to local NHS trust meetings and participates in mental health committees to raise awareness and give feedback.

They also operate a Swindon Listening Line from 6pm to midnight seven days a week for anyone who is feeling stressed or worried and doesn’t know who to turn to.
