A MAN is being questioned by detectives over a blaze which gutted a derelict house in Deburgh Street last night.
Firefighters were called after the alarm was raised at 9.45pm yesterday to the incident at the terraced property in Even Swindon.
Detective Sergeant Joe Saunders, of Swindon CID, said a local man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and is currently being questioned at Gablecross.
Police are also appealing for witnesses to the incident.
Two appliances from Swindon and Westlea attended, and they requested three more crews - from Swindon, Stratton and Royal Wootton Bassett - to help when they arrived on the scene.
The aerial appliance, incident command unit and Fire Emergency Support Service were also in attendance.
Residents in adjacent properties from evacuated and cared for by FESS. Their homes were checked by crews due to the smoke spread.
Firefighters were on the scene until the early hours damping down hotspots, removing roof tiles and ensuring the building was safe.
