A LAW firm is holding free drop-in clinics throughout Action for Brain Injury Week.

Withy King, in Newport Street, is organising the clinics for individuals or their families living with the effects of brain injury. Sessions are from 9am to 5pm throughout this week.

Action for Brain Injury Week is run by charity Headway, to highlight the role of carers in looking after people with brain injuries and the extent to which they are often alone and unsupported at a time of great stress.

One Swindon mother, who did not want to be named, has spoken of the challenges and rewards of caring for her disabled son, who has cerebral palsy which the family says was the result of a delay in his delivery.

He was not breathing when he was born and it took medical staff 15 minutes to resuscitate him. He has permanent brain damage and physical disabilities affecting his left side, as well as seizures, visual problems and a very small head.

His mother said: “When I found out Cayden had brain damage, I was in shock. The news didn’t sink in; it was too hard to believe. Our future suddenly seemed so uncertain and I didn’t know what to expect.”

Cayden’s solicitor, Paul Rumley, partner and clinical negligence specialist at Withy King, is helping the Davies family bring a claim against the hospital where Cayden was born.

He said: “Cayden’s case illustrates that brain injury can occur as a result of medical treatment which goes wrong. A happy occasion, such as the birth of a child, can so easily become something far more challenging.
