THE annual meeting of Swindon Council is to take place at the Civic Offices tomorrow at 2.30pm.

The meeting will see the full council choose the new mayor, Coun Mick Bray (Con, Lydiard and Freshbrook), who has been the deputy major for the last year, as well as a new deputy major.

Councillors will then elect a leader, who will the appoint a deputy leader and cabinet members.

Also among the items on the agenda is the allocation of seats to political groups and appointments to committees, other bodies and outside bodies.

The meeting will be the first test of the Tories’ majority of just one councillor, with a motion against the Haboakus plans to build nearly 250 homes in Gorse Hill.

Labour has submitted a motion, backed by the Lib Dems, asking the council to agree ‘it does not support the disposal of public land at Pickards Small Field and Kembrey Grass Field and wishes this land to remain as open space’.
