Q: Will the Flame always be visible?

A: No, the Torch Relay will travel in two different ways – convoy mode, when it will be inside a vehicle and not visible, and torchbearer mode, when it will be carried by the Olympic torchbearers and on public display.

Q: Who chose the route?

A: The route has been selected by LOCOG (the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games). Swindon Borough Council is working with the police and partner organisations to implement these plans and help ensure the event is safe, successful and causes minimum disruption.

Q: Will there be road closures?

A: No, to avoid unnecessary diversions and delay we are not implementing any fixed road closures. Instead, a system of rolling road closures will be in place as the Torch Relay follows its route.

Q: Will there be delays?

A: As the Torch Relay and associated convoy passes we anticipate traffic to encounter delays of between 15 and 30 minutes. This may increase if particularly large volumes of traffic are encountered due to the event.

Q: Will residents’ Parking be affected?

A: Yes, on-street parking restrictions will be in place in some streets on the route. These are unavoidable due to the size of the convoy and we apologise for any disruption caused. In the affected streets the restrictions start at 9am on Wednesday, May 23, and residents will not be able to park there until after the convoy has passed, which should be no later than 3.30pm. Residents are asked to park in a different street unaffected by restrictions in their permitted zone. Signs and cones will highlight these restrictions. Parking enforcement will be in operation to issue fixed penalty notices or, if necessary, alert the police so the vehicle can be removed if causing an obstruction. For more information about waiting restrictions please visit the website www.swindon.gov.uk/torchrelay

Q: Will deliveries be affected?

A: Yes, as with on-street parking, loading and unloading will also not be possible in certain streets on the route between 9am and around 4pm. If you are expecting a delivery at this time, please make alternative arrangements. Parking enforcement will be in operation during this period. Find out where the restrictions will be by visiting the website www.swindon.gov.uk/torchrelay

Q: Will there be changes to bus services?

A: No, local bus services will operate as normal. Bus routes which cover the Torch Relay route will, like other traffic, encounter delays as the Flame passes. These are anticipated to be relatively short (between 15 and 30 minutes).

Q: If I am arranging for a group of people to line a specific part of the route, what do I need to do?

A: Please let us know of your plans by emailing torchrelayenquiries@swindon.gov.uk It is important to include where you will be, roughly how many adults and children are involved, and a contact name with your mobile phone number. If necessary we will provide support, for example with stewarding. We will also get in touch if, for instance, the Torch Relay is delayed or the route has to change.

Q: Will there be any changes to rubbish and recycling collections?

A: No, these services will continue as normal. As usual, please remember to put your refuse out for collection by 6.30am and recycling by 7.30am.
