POLICE have arrested six people after finding more than £4,000 in street-ready cannabis in a series of raids in the town centre.

Officers executed a warrant at a stall in the Tented Market around midday on Wednesday and a 27-year-old man was detained after drugs dog Griffin discovered a small quantity of suspected cocaine and wraps of herbal cannabis with a street value of £400.

Intelligence then led police to two other addresses, in Theobald Street and Cannon Street, where they discovered more cannabis pre-packaged or waiting to be prepared for street deals to the value of around £3,500.

Four people, two women aged 56 and 32 and two men aged 20 and 33, were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of class B drugs.

Another 33-year-old woman was arrested at the house in Cannon Street.

All were questioned at Gablecross Police Station and have been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Town centre beat manager PC Paul Bezzant said the information had come from the public and the supply of cannabis in the area had been disrupted.

He said: “We are pleased with the result and it’s great that we have managed to take this amount of cannabis off the streets.

“It was as the result of intelligence passed to us by the community and due to prompt and pro-active action we managed to secure warrants for several addresses and execute them consecutively.

“At the initial warrant we had around six officers assisted by a drugs dog and as it snowballed more officers backed us up. The investigation is still at an early stage so I cannot give too much away.

“We have managed to disrupt the supply of cannabis in the town centre and would urge anyone who has any infomration about drug dealing in the area to tell us so we can keep up the fight against crime.”

In another raid in Ramsbury Avenue, Penhill, early yesterday morning police recovered around 40 cannabis plants of differing maturity.

A 43-year-old man was arrested and in excess of 50 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of £10,000 were recovered. The man has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Anyone with any information about drug dealing in their area should call Wiltshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
