THE Wootton Bassett Arts Festival is to host a cinema screening of Ben Johnson’s classic comedy, Volpone, in July.

The hilarious Jacobean satire combines lust, greed and mistaken identity in a way that still has something to say to us today.

The play was originally performed on stage at the Greenwich Theatre and filmed live, which means that it has all the atmosphere of the theatre, but on film.

Miranda Shirnia, chairman of the Wootton Bassett Arts Festival, said: “Sadly there aren’t many chances to see this classic performed live, so this is a great opportunity to do the next best thing.

“This showing of Volpone will appeal to anyone who loves the theatre, but it will particularly appeal to English literature and drama students as Jacobean plays just aren’t staged often enough for those of us who love them.”

Wootton Bassett Arts Festival is showing the film, in association with the Royal Wootton Bassett Community Cinema based at the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy’s 6th Form, at 4pm on July 6.

Tickets cost £3 and are available from the Post Office on Royal Wootton Bassett High Street or by calling Andrea Smith on 07973 149668 or Allison Bucknell on 07976 891377.
