PEOPLE will get the chance to explore Swindon’s hidden treasures at night this weekend as some of the town’s museums and heritage venues open late.

Today, both Lydiard House and Steam will be throwing open their doors between 5pm and 9pm as part of the national Museums at Night.

At Lydiard House, visitors can explore the intimate atmosphere of the State Rooms and view the permanent collection.

There’s the opportunity to see ‘Traditions’, an embroidery display created specially for Lydiard House by the Great Western Embroiderers.

Some of the artists will be at hand to talk about their work.

Sci-fi and train enthusiasts can enjoy the atmosphere of visiting the Steam museum at night and explore ‘out of this world’ experiences at the sci-fi exhibition.

It showcases original costumes, props and memorabilia from the Star Wars, Terminator, Gremlins and Iron Man series.

Steam’s new café, Platform One, will also be open during the evening, from 5pm until 8.30pm.

Last night the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, in Bath Road, Old Town, held a special opening.

Visitors viewed its collections, including the ‘They Take Art Seriously in Swindon’ exhibition and objects from Swindon’s Jurassic past and from the Roman Empire.

There were also displays covering Swindon’s more recent social history, including a feature on the legendary actress Diana Dors.

Coun Garry Perkins, cabinet member for culture, said: “Swindon’s Museums at Night events are a great opportunity for residents and visitors to try something different with their evening.

“All members of the family are welcome to come and see what wonderful works of art, historical pieces and magnificent exhibitions we have here on our doorstep.

“There really is something for everyone.”
