A DRIVER has been killed and four others injured in a single-car crash at one of Europe's leading vehicle testing tracks.

Bedfordshire Police said the driver, a 47-year-old man from Swindon was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at the Millbrook proving ground, near Marston Moretaine.

The man has been named locally as Honda worker David Allan.

Four other workers from the Swindon plant were injured in the crash and are now in hospital.

A spokesman for Honda said: "At around 11:30 yesterday morning, while undertaking routine vehicle testing at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, five Honda Associates were involved in a serious incident.

"Tragically one of the Associates was fatally injured. The remaining Associates were taken to the local hospital where they were treated for various injuries, which are not life threatening.

"The family of the Associates have been informed.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the Associates at this time.

"Collision Investigation Officers from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Roads Policing Unit have carried out a full forensic examination of the scene and are being assisted by the Health and Safety Executive.

"More details will be released once an inquest is opened by the Coroner."

None of the passengers travelling in the car - three men and a woman who were taken to Bedford Hospital - suffered life-threatening injuries.

A police spokesman said: "Collision investigation officers from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Roads Policing Unit have carried out a full forensic examination of the scene and are being assisted by the Health and Safety Executive.

"Colleagues from the East of England Ambulance Service and Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended."
