A PENSIONER has been trying to clean up his local community by going out on regular litter picks in Liden.

Car tyres, plastic bottles and bags full of dog mess have been among the rubbish found by 76-year-old Brian Cavill.

Brian, of Ridge Nether Moor, has been out on regular litter picks for the last month and in this short period of time has already accumulated 17 bags of rubbish.

The pensioner said he started collecting after being invited to join another group of litter pickers called the Mere Group.

He said he was getting sick of the state of the local area, especially around the local shops where people were dumping rubbish despite the proximity of bins.He has also used a website, Fix My Street, where people can post any problems they have in their area.

He said: “I am not the only one, there is a group, the Mere Group, who have been doing it for years.

“I started about a month ago and in that time I have collected 17 full bags of rubbish in the Liden area.

“The main thing I find is sweet packets, plastic bottles and drinks cans.

“The most extraordinary thing I have cleared up would have to be the car wheels.

“I would say the worst place is by the shops or the road going past the post office.

“I use a website which is excellent, if something is posted on there, it is usually cleared in a few days.

“This is nothing against the council, it does its best to get around the area, but there is only so much it can do.

“I think something needs to be done to educate younger people about dropping litter.

“We have got through the majority of the worst areas – it is just a case of keeping on top of it now.”
