POLICE are still appealing for witnesses after two men died in a collision on the M4 where it is believed one of the cars was travelling the wrong way.

Officers think one of the vehicles could have been travelling against the flow of the eastbound traffic just before the incident between junctions 14 and 13 on Saturday at about 10.34pm.

The driver of a Mazda, an 82-year-old man from Swindon, was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of a Volkswagen, a 48-year-old man from Swindon, was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, in Oxford, but died shortly after 5am yesterday.

An elderly woman who was a passenger in the Mazda remains in a critical condition at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

A spokesman for West Berkshire Coroner’s Office said the names of the two men would be released when an inquest is opened into their death on Friday.

Sergeant Dick Thorpe, who is leading the investigation, said: “At this stage we are investigating the possibility that one of the vehicles was travelling in the wrong direction against the flow of the eastbound traffic.

“I am keen to hear from anyone who was on the M4 at this time and witnessed the collision, or saw a vehicle travelling in the wrong direction.”

Thames Valley Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision.
